The state of Odisha received a significant boost in its industrialization efforts as the government approved eight mega projects worth a whopping Rs 1.51 lakh crore on Monday. These projects are set to create over 62,000 job opportunities and were given the green light at the High-Level Clearance Authority meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
Spanning across six districts - Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Khurda, and Sambalpur - these projects cover various sectors such as aluminium, chemicals, steel, textiles, and ancillary and downstream metal industries. Chief Minister Majhi proudly shared that this approval marks the sixth successful HLCA meeting since June 12 last year. In total, 62 projects have been given the go-ahead, with an investment potential of Rs 5.67 lakh crore, which can potentially generate 2.42 lakh jobs.
"This progress is a clear step towards our national goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047 and our state's vision of Samruddha Odisha by 2036. We are confidently moving towards becoming a leading industrial and investment hub in India," Majhi stated. He also mentioned that the state of Odisha will celebrate its 100-year anniversary in 2036.
Among the approved projects, the aluminium sector stood out with Vedanta Limited leading the way with an investment proposal of Rs 1,28,000 crore. This project aims to establish a 3 MTPA Aluminium Smelter and 4900 MW Captive Power Plant in Dhenkanal, which is expected to create a whopping 30,000 job opportunities.
The chemicals sector also received a significant proposal from SRF Limited, with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore to set up a specialty chemicals and refrigerant manufacturing unit in Ganjam. This project is expected to generate 20,000 employment opportunities. In the steel and metal downstream sector, Jindal India Steel Tech Limited has proposed a 1.26 MTPA specialty steel processing facility in Dhenkanal with an investment of Rs 3,600 crore, creating 2,000 jobs.
Shyam Steel Manufacturing Limited also plans to invest Rs 2,490 crore to set up an integrated steel plant, DI pipe unit, and 46 MW CPP in Keonjhar, employing 2,370 persons. Additionally, Linde India Limited will invest Rs 1,303.50 crore to establish an Air Separation Unit in Jajpur, offering high-quality industrial gases and creating 100 job opportunities.
In the ancillary metal sector, Star Metal Works Private Limited has proposed an investment of Rs 2,291 crore in Sambalpur to set up a narrow hot strip mill, cold rolling, and plate cum Steckle mill, generating 250 jobs. Meanwhile, Supreme Metals Export Private Limited plans to establish a 1.2 MTPA rolling mill for TMT bars and wire rods in Keonjhar, worth Rs 1,500 crore, creating 680 jobs.
Lastly, in the textiles sector, Sportking India Limited will invest Rs 2,055 crore in Khurda to establish a cotton and blended yarn manufacturing unit with an annual capacity of 62,000 MT, creating 4,800 employment opportunities. These projects are a significant step towards the state's goal of becoming a leading industrial and investment hub, showcasing its potential for growth and development.
