NYC Council votes to honor the late Ol' Dirty Bastard by making Nov. 15
The New York City Council has voted to approve a resolution to make November 15th "Ol' Dirty Bastard Day" in honor of the late Wu-Tang Clan member. This day falls on the late Russell Tyrone Jones' birthday, which would have been his 55th.

The resolution was introduced by City Council Member Chi Ossé, 25, in anticipation of Lincoln Center's celebration to honor the hip-hop artist's work and legacy.

"It being the 50th year of hip-hop, I wanted to recognize some of my personal favorite artists and contributors to the culture," said Ossé. "My dad really liked him. I remember listening to a lot of Ol' Dirty Bastard in the car on the way to school."

While Wu-Tang Clan is most closely associated with Staten Island, New York, Ol' Dirty Bastard was from Brooklyn. His hometown pride was made clear on his song “Brooklyn Zoo.”

Ol' Dirty Bastard now joins his groupmate Ghostface Killah, real name Dennis Coles, in having his own day. Ghostface Killah's day was declared by Mayor Adams last year when Coles opened a coffee shop in Staten Island.

City Council Member Chi Ossé hopes to honor more of the founding members of Wu-Tang with their own days, including Robert Diggs and Gary Grice. The other founding members of Wu-Tang are RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and Ol' Dirty Bastard. Cappadonna later joined them as an official member.

The late ODB would be proud to know that his legacy is honored in his hometown. New Yorkers can celebrate his life and achievements on November 15th, Ol' Dirty Bastard Day.
