Bhopal is facing a high Air Quality Index (AQI) of 310, despite the tall claims made by the MP Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) and other concerned authorities, such as the District Administration, to comply with the Supreme Court’s order to check pollution levels and ensure the use of green crackers.
This high AQI shows that the claims made by MPPCB and the District Administration are in contradiction. The drop in night temperature has also been a contributing factor to the air pollution, as it helps in precipitating pollutants, and has been particularly harmful to people who suffer from respiratory and eye problems.
Green activist Rashid Noor Khan has commented on the situation, stating that MPPCB and District Administration have failed to be vigilant on the timing of use of crackers. He says that this is why the AQI is so high, and that if there was more vigilance on the use of green crackers, the AQI would not have been so high.
Environmentalist Dr SC Pandey also expressed his concern over the high AQI in Bhopal. He noted that the high AQI reflects the lack of monitoring from the authorities, including MPPCB and the District Administration. He also mentioned that if MPPCB was indeed monitoring the use of crackers, the AQI would not have been so high.
Dr Lokendra Dave, the HOD of GMC Pulmonary Department, further noted that pollutants create smog which drops the temperature and remains suspended in the atmosphere for a longer time. He says that this is very harmful for people’s heart, lungs, brain and eyes when inhaled, and that the high AQI is a very serious matter in Bhopal.
Data from the AQI Monitoring System of MP Pollution Control Board shows that the AQI in Bhopal fell from Moderate to Very Poor within four hours on Diwali. Singrauli was the most polluted district with an AQI of 377.
