Mumbai: During a recent IPL 2026 match between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, batter Nitish Rana from Delhi Capitals has been found guilty of breaching the Code of Conduct. As a result, he has been penalized 25% of his match fee and has also received 1 demerit point, as stated by the IPL in an official statement. The incident occurred during the 19th over, when Rana was seen in a heated argument with the fourth umpire over a request for a glove change by Tristan Stubbs in extreme heat.
It was reported that DC head coach Hemang Badani was also involved in the discussion with the umpire. Shortly after, on the third ball of the same over, Stubbs was dismissed by Jamie Overton, with Noor Ahmed making the catch. Rana, visibly frustrated, threw his bat and gloves on his way back to the dressing room.
According to the IPL's Code of Conduct for Players, Rana was found to have breached article 2.3 which prohibits the use of offensive, obscene, or profane words that can be heard by the spectators or viewers, whether through the stump microphone or otherwise. This includes instances where players may swear out of frustration with their own performance or luck. Moving on to the match itself, it was a thrilling encounter where Sanju Samson's century and Jamie Overton's four-wicket haul led the Chennai Super Kings to their first victory of the IPL 2026 season, defeating the Delhi Capitals by 23 runs.
After the early departure of opener Ruturaj, Samson and Ayush Mhatre formed a formidable partnership of 113 runs for the second wicket. Later, Shivam Dube's quickfire 20* off 10 balls added to CSK's already impressive total of 212/2. In response, the Delhi Capitals started off well with openers KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka putting on a 61-run partnership.
However, the CSK bowlers, led by Jamie Overton, made a strong comeback and restricted the visitors to 189 all out. Overton's figures of 4-0-18-4 were the highlight of the bowling performance by the Super Kings. In conclusion, it was an eventful match with a few heated moments on the field, but ultimately the Chennai Super Kings emerged victorious.
This win will surely boost their confidence going forward in the IPL 2026 season. This is Mumbai reporting for Orissa POST, Odisha's No.1 English Daily.
