Nicola Sturgeon, the former First Minister of Scotland, has been released without charge following her arrest earlier today. Police Scotland have confirmed the news, saying that a 52-year-old woman, who was arrested in connection with an ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party, has been released at 5:24pm.
The investigation, dubbed 'Operation Branchform', began in 2021 and has seen searches of a number of properties, including Ms Sturgeon and her husband Peter Murrell's home. A police tent was erected in the garden of the home in April, however, there hasn't been a police presence today.
A spokesman for the police said that a report will be sent to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and that the matter remains active for the purposes of the Contempt of Court Act 1981. They advised caution when discussing it on social media.
Mr Murrell was also arrested in April, but he was released without charge pending further inquiry.
