Netflix fans are once again buzzing with accusations of plagiarism, this time targeting the popular period drama Bridgerton. The controversy began when viewers noticed similarities between a steamy scene in the latest season of Bridgerton and a scene in the hit Netflix series Emily in Paris.
The fourth season of Emily in Paris premiered recently, following the charming adventures of Emily as she navigates a complicated love triangle between Gabriel and Alfie. Spoiler alert for those who haven't watched the first five episodes yet!
In the third episode, Emily and Gabriel finally rekindle their romance at a lavish masquerade ball in Paris. Despite Alfie's declaration of love for Emily, she ends up leaving the event with her French chef neighbor in a horse-drawn carriage. This scene is a nod to Bridgerton, as Mindy references the show when the carriage arrives at the ball.
The original saucy carriage scene between Colin and Penelope in season three of Bridgerton left many viewers feeling hot and bothered. Mindy jokes about this in Emily in Paris, saying, "Oh! Someone's living out their horny Bridgerton fantasies." However, some fans were not amused by the similarities between the scenes in the two shows.
On social media, viewers expressed their frustration with the apparent copycat scene. Ava posted on X, "I'm sorry. Are we watching Emily in Paris, or Bridgerton?? The ballroom, the shift from a full ballroom to just the two of them, the horse carriage. Who stole what from whom???" Brittany also commented on the scene, saying, "If I had a nickel for every time I saw someone make out in a carriage on Netflix this summer, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice!" Mallie added, "That Bridgerton carriage reference was almost... too timely? Followed almost immediately by the dancing 'alone' in the ballroom scene? Like this was clearly insider Netflix baseball since this was taped before this season of Bridgerton was released."
However, not all viewers were upset by the similarities. Sarah shared her excitement on Twitter, writing, "EMILY AND GABRIEL CARRIAGE SCENE NOBODY MOVE!!!" In an interview with Forbes, Andy Fleming, the executive producer and director of the first three episodes of Emily in Paris, addressed the Bridgerton references. "There was a Bridgerton joke in there, like we referenced Bridgerton in that," he said. "We're not going to out, out Bridgerton," he added, noting that they "dipped our toe in that pond and then went in another direction."
Meanwhile, actor Lucas Bravo, who plays Gabriel in Emily in Paris, shared his experience filming the scene. "It wasn't fun to shoot," he admitted. "It was so noisy and filming on the pavement you don't hear the lines. It was supposed to be the first time they kissed in a long time, so we were trying to be sexy and passionate while shaking all over the place, but I think it worked out," he told Access Hollywood.
Both Bridgerton and Emily in Paris are available for streaming on Netflix. The second part of Emily in Paris season four is set to be released on September 12.
