Today, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's Prime Minister, was rushed to Sheba Hospital in Tel Hashomer, near Tel Aviv, after he reported feeling unwell. According to his office, the Prime Minister underwent medical assessments and is now in good condition.
Also known as 'Bibi', Mr Netanyahu has served as his country’s Prime Minister three times and is the longest-serving Prime Minister since Israel’s independence. Earlier this year, during a visit to the UK, he received a cold welcome, with protesters and loud boos heard outside Downing Street. Signs held opposite the gates of Downing Street dubbed the Prime Minister as a ‘dictator on the run’.
Mr Netanyahu is also on trial for fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes after a series of scandals. Protesters believe the current far-right government, the most right-wing in Israel’s history, is dragging the nation towards authoritarianism by upending its system of checks and balances.
Just a 15-minute drive from the Sheba Hospital is Pinchas Rosen Street, the scene of a stabbing and car ramming attack two weeks ago. Police spokesperson Eli Levi said that this was a deliberate attack, and that a civilian shot and killed the driver.
The country had been on high alert due to a major military operation in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin. Thousands of Palestinians have fled the city’s refugee camp after the assault began. Deputy governor of the Jenin refugee camp, Kamal Abu al-Roub, said that around 3,000 people had left the camp so far.
