Hip-hop has been a powerful force in the music industry over the past 50 years, creating millionaires and billionaires in its wake. Despite this success, many of the genre's pioneers have never received the recognition they deserve. To help rectify this, Nas, Steve Stoute and Ben and Felicia Horowitz have come together to launch an initiative to honor and financially support the early hip-hop innovators.
The Paid In Full Foundation, which is organizing the inaugural Hip Hop Grandmaster Awards, is set to honor hip-hop legends Rakim and Scarface at a celebration in Las Vegas. Not only will 100% of the proceeds go towards supporting hip-hop greats and other creatives, but the Foundation also aims to secure a financial future for many of the trailblazers who shaped the genre before it became so popular.
The Foundation stated, "Over the past several decades, hip-hop music and culture rose from a local niche New York art form into a global phenomenon. In doing so, it has created countless careers, many fortunes, and, most importantly, gave hope and aspiration to a generation of young people."
Unfortunately, many of the most impactful original artists never received recognition proportional with their exceptional contributions to arts and culture, and The Paid In Full Foundation seeks to rectify this by providing grants for those artists to pursue their creative and intellectual pursuits. Steve Stoute revealed that the foundation will give $500,000 and healthcare to hip-hop contributors who didn't get what they deserved.
The Hip Hop Grandmaster Awards is now sold out and will take place on November 17. The event will mark the beginning of an annual tradition of giving back to the pioneers of hip-hop, and it is sure to be an emotional celebration of the genre's roots and its lasting impact.
