The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recently announced a tender for the construction of a 320-metre stretch of the Mumbai Coastal Road. This stretch, known as the "missing link", will connect the Lotus Jetty to Baroda Palace in Worli and is expected to be completed before the next monsoon season. The estimated cost for this project is approximately Rs 9.64 crores.
The Mumbai Coastal Road is a planned 7.25-kilometre promenade that stretches from Lotus Jetty to Baroda Palace. This promenade is longer than the iconic Marine Drive, which is only 3.5 kilometres long. In fact, it is more than twice the length of Marine Drive. Two major sections of the promenade have already been opened to the public on August 15. These include a 2.75-kilometre stretch from Priyadarshini Park to Haji Ali and a 2.5-kilometre stretch from Baroda Palace to Worli seaface.
However, there are still 2.25 kilometres of the promenade that are yet to be opened to the public. This includes three stretches: 400 metres from the MSRDC office to Tunnel Canopy, 800 metres from Haji Ali to Lotus Jetty, and 730 metres from Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk to J.K. Kapoor Chowk in Worli. The BMC received clearance from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority in June 2025 for these sections. Now, the BMC has invited tenders for the remaining 320-metre stretch of the promenade post-monsoon.
The pre-bid meeting for this project is scheduled for November 28 at the BMC's Engineer Hub in Worli. Interested parties can submit their bids by December 8. According to a senior civic official, construction on the stretch from Lotus Jetty to Baroda Palace is expected to begin next year and should be completed by June 2026. However, the section from Haji Ali to Lotus Jetty may take an additional year to complete as construction will only start after the underground car parking at Haji Ali is finished.
In other Mumbai news, the BMC has clarified that there will be toilet and drinking water facilities available on the promenade of the Mumbai Coastal Road. This promenade is part of the larger Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which is worth nearly Rs 14,000 crores. The 10.58-kilometre, 8-lane expressway will connect Worli to Marine Drive and offers spaces for walking, jogging, and cycling.
