The district administration in Sambalpur has made a decision regarding the upcoming Muharram festival on July 17. According to a recent report, religious processions will be allowed, but with a condition. The participants have been strictly warned against carrying weapons during the processions.

This decision was made during a meeting organized by the district administration on Wednesday at the Zilla Parishad conference hall. The meeting, chaired by District Collector Akshay Sunil Agrawal, was attended by members of eight Muharram committees, SMC commissioner Ved Bhushan, additional district magistrate Sucharu Kumar Bal, chief development officer Dharmendra Mallick of Zilla Parishad, ASP Haresh Chandra Pandey, and Sadar Sub-Collector Pushpanjali Panda.

During the meeting, the district administration emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and brotherhood during the festival. They urged the Muharram committees to cooperate with them and ensure that the festival is celebrated in a disciplined manner. Collector Agrawal also requested the police and Muharram committees to work together and finalize the route for the processions.

In addition, the Muharram committees also made some requests to the district administration. They asked for repairs to be made to the roads, cleaning of drains, availability of drinking water and uninterrupted power supply, and removal of sagging electric wires from the roads before the festival. The Daleipada Muharram committee also appealed to the state government for support and cooperation during the festival.

To ensure the safety of the participants, water tanks will be placed along the procession routes, and fire brigade personnel will be deployed on the day of the processions. The Collector also instructed the concerned officials to keep the primary health center open and have ambulances ready during the festivities. It was also announced that all liquor shops will remain closed on the day of the processions.

The Collector has urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure that there is no loss of life or property during the festival. This decision by the district administration has been welcomed by the residents of Sambalpur, as it marks the first time in a while that religious processions have been permitted. It can be recalled that all processions were banned in the town after communal clashes during the Hanuman Jayanti procession on April 14 last year.
