Tragedy has struck in the French Alps. A mother and her son from Britain have been killed in an avalanche at the resort of St Gervais les Bains, on Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the French Alps.
The avalanche occurred at an altitude of 7,545ft, while the two skiers were off-piste with their instructor at around 3.40pm on Thursday. According to local media, the exact site of the avalanche was far from the ski lifts and had nothing to do with the edge of the slope.
Dozens of mountain rescuers were mobilized to search for those trapped under the tons of snow. Unfortunately, a man and a woman were found dead, while a third person was injured. Five more skiers were rescued.
The mayor of Saint-Gervais, Jean-Marc Peillex, has expressed his sadness at the tragedy. He said that the weather conditions were too unstable for such outings, and that there are enough marked paths to ski on. “It’s terrible what happened. A family is decimated, and we are very sad in Saint-Gervais.”
