Little Black girls now have an inspiring example to look up to in the world of gymnastics: Monet Tillman Horsey. The owner of Dream Chasers Gymnastics in New Castle, Delaware, Horsey has been living her dream of owning a gym for the past six years.
Horsey, who was one of few Black gymnasts when she was younger, is driven to further the dreams of Black girls who wish to emulate the success of someone like Simone Biles. She spoke about the inspiring example Biles provides:
"They definitely look at her as a role model, especially with her background and things she had to overcome. It just shows the girls that anything is possible."
Dream Chasers Gymnastics started as a humble venture in Horsey's dining room before it moved to a church classroom. Now, it is a fully operational gymnastics gym located in a warehouse. Horsey finds tremendous joy in being able to do what she loves every day, while also being a mentor to the 400 students who attend the only Black-owned gymnastics center in the First State.
14-year-old Brianna Blake is one of the students who appreciates going to Dream Chasers. Her mother saw a post on Instagram about the Black-owned gym and thought it would be a great fit for her daughter.
These are exciting times for Black girls in gymnastics. Horsey has made it possible for them to have a place to practice and grow, and to see that their dreams of becoming the next Simone Biles are indeed possible.
