Bhubaneswar: The recent news of the doors of Ratna Bhandar in Puri Srimandir being opened on July 8 has been dismissed by Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan. Earlier today, DB Garnayak, Superintendent of ASI Puri Circle, claimed that the doors would be opened for inspection and maintenance work in the presence of core and technical committee members.
However, Harichandan clarified that no such decision has been made by the state government. He stated that the final decision lies with the 'Chhatisha Niyog', the highest decision-making body of Jagannath Temple. He also emphasized that no one person or entity can make this decision on their own.
The law minister also mentioned that strict action will be taken against the ASI official for providing false information about the opening of the Ratna Bhandar. A separate statement from the Law Ministry also stated that the government has not received any proposal from the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee regarding the opening of the Ratna Bhandar.
Earlier, Garnayak had highlighted the urgent need for repair work in the Ratna Bhandar. He stated that cracks were observed, stones had fallen, and iron rods were missing according to a 2018 report. The walls were also in poor condition, and laser scanning revealed cracks in the outer walls and joints that could potentially allow rainwater to damage the valuables inside.
Garnayak also stressed that it is the responsibility of everyone to ensure the safety of the temple. He urged Chief Minister Mohan Majhi to take action and discuss the matter with ASI, temple officials, and make a suitable decision for the six-year delay.
