Milwaukee honors Black doctor who delivered over 10,000 babies with street name.
Dr. William Finlayson is a beloved figure in Milwaukee's history. For nearly six decades, the 98-year-old has served as an example of Black excellence in both the healthcare and finance industries. This week, the city of Milwaukee honored him with a special tribute.

On Tuesday, Aug. 8, the street where Dr. Finlayson first set up his private practice was officially named N. Doctor William Finlayson Street. He was affectionately known as "the baby doctor" due to his four decades of obstetrics and gynecology practice and his delivery of nearly 10,000 babies. He was the first Black OB-GYN at both St. Joseph and Sinai Hospital, and he also opened Milwaukee's first Black-owned bank, North Milwaukee State Bank.

Albert L Smith, Master of Ceremonies for the street naming, noted the significance of this tribute. “Milwaukee has many streets named after people who have made an impact on the city, such as Juneau, Kilborn, Cass Street and more. Now, we have a street to honor Dr. Finlayson, a towering figure in Milwaukee history.”

N. Doctor William Finlayson street is located alongside Vel R. Phillips Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, recognizing the prominence of the near centenarian. The celebratory event was especially moving for Finlayson. “Oh, it was a great ceremony, it’s very memorable. I hope to look back five years from now; it’s an honor,” he said.

The celebration was made even more special by an announcement from Dr. Eve M Hall, president and CEO of the Greater Milwaukee Urban League. Finlayson and his family generously donated $10,000, which will be used to resurrect the W.E.B Dubois Club, an organization that works to empower Black men in the areas of finance, education and leadership skills.

Dr. William Finlayson is an inspiring and beloved figure in Milwaukee's history. This week, the city honored him with a fitting tribute that will forever be remembered.
