Millions of commuters are set to face more travel misery over the next few weeks as a fresh round of rail strikes are announced. Members of the RMT Union will walk out today, Saturday August 26, as well as next Saturday, September 2.
The strikes are caused by a dispute between several rail trade unions and train operators over issues such as pay, job security, and working conditions. This includes the proposal to scrap staffed booking offices and the introduction of driver-only trains. RMT general secretary Mick Lynch has commented that the union had to call more strike action as they have not received any revised or improved offers from the Rail Delivery Group.
14 train operating companies are set to be affected by the strike. Chiltern Railways has warned of severely disrupted or cancelled services, with an amended timetable in operation. Cross Country Trains advise passengers to check before they travel, as their service on Sunday will also be affected. Greater Anglia is running a reduced service between 07.00 and 23.00, with some routes having a near-normal service and some routes facing short-notice cancellations.
LNER, East Midlands Railway, c2c, Great Western Railway, Northern Trains, South Eastern, South Western Railway, Transpennine Express, Avanti West Coast and West Midlands Trains are all running reduced services, with some routes not running at all. GTR will also run a limited service, with the usual non-stop Gatwick Express service between London Victoria, Gatwick Airport and Brighton not running.
The dispute between the rail trade unions and train operators has been ongoing for over a year now, with more strikes planned for September. With all this disruption, it's important for passengers to check their journey in advance before they set off.
