It is with deep sorrow that we report on the current condition of former NFL wide receiver, Mike Williams. The Buffalo, New York native and Syracuse University graduate's life has been put in peril after a steel beam fell on his head at a construction site on September 1st.
According to The Tampa Bay Times, the accident caused severe head and spinal cord injuries resulting in paralysis in his arm and lower body. His father, Wendell Muhammed, shared on a GoFundMe Page that Williams has not regained consciousness since the accident.
The severity of his condition is further expounded upon by Tierney Lyle, the mother of Williams' 8-year-old daughter, Mya. Lyle and Mya visited him at St. Joseph's Hospital where he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit. Lyle shared that Williams was mostly non-responsive, but when he heard their voices he was able to open his eyes and cry.
Williams had a successful college career at Syracuse University where he finished ninth in career receptions, eighth in receiving yards, and tied for second in receiving touchdowns. He was then drafted in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In his rookie season with the Bucs, Williams set a single-season record with 11 touchdowns and 964 receiving yards. He was a runner-up for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. The Buccaneers signed him to a five-year contract extension worth $39.62 million in July 2013, however the team traded him to the Buffalo Bills the following year. After spending two years with the Kansas City Chiefs, Williams was waived before the start of the regular season, making the Bills his last team played for.
In his NFL career, Williams appeared in 63 games with 52 starts and recorded 223 catches for 3,089 yards and 26 touchdowns.
We pray for a speedy recovery for Mike Williams and hope that this tragedy reminds us to remain vigilant in our safety at all times.
