The winter season has officially arrived in the UK, with the first snowfall of the year seen in County Durham this morning. For those of us who love the beauty of snow, this is an exciting time.
The cold snap has been brought about by an Arctic blast, with the lowest temperature of autumn 2023 recorded at -7.7°C in Shap, Cumbria, on Saturday night. The Met Office has said that the UK will be seeing wintry showers this week, bringing the possibility of snow across Northern England and Scotland, and the chance of ‘more significant snowfall’ across the south.
Monday is expected to be cloudy and damp with showers and strong winds in Wales, south west and north east England, and parts of Scotland. Wednesday will be sunny with some showers around the coastal areas, and Thursday and Friday will be cold with wintry showers in the north and some rain, possibly hill snow, in the south.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Harris said: “At present, the most likely outcome beyond mid-week is that rain from the west slowly moves east, with snow possible over higher ground, and a continued risk of showers over eastern parts. However, there is a chance that a more active weather system arrives from the southwest, which would bring more widespread rain, stronger winds, and the potential for more significant snowfall should the air over the UK become sufficiently cold ahead of it.”
So, it looks like we’ll be seeing a variety of weather conditions this week, but with County Durham being the first area to see the white stuff this season, it’s an exciting time for snow-lovers! Let’s just hope that the snowfall does indeed become more significant this week!
