Earlier this week in Melbourne's west, a man caused quite a stir when he held a father and his toddler hostage during a two-and-a-half-hour siege. The situation escalated even further when the man began shooting at the police. It was a tense and frightening ordeal for all involved.
After an intense investigation, a 26-year-old man from Snake Valley has been charged with a multitude of offenses in connection with the incident in Weir Views on Tuesday. The police had first noticed a stolen vehicle, which was believed to have been taken from a 70-year-old woman in a carjacking earlier that day in Snake Valley, around 3:40pm in Melton.
The car was then tracked to Leon Drive in Weir Views, where the man got out and allegedly started firing shots at the police. Fortunately, no officers were injured. However, the situation took a turn for the worse when the man stormed into a nearby home, where a father-of-five, Ali, and his one-year-old son were still inside.
According to Ali, he was taking a nap when he suddenly woke up to find that a man had barricaded himself in his daughter's bedroom. The entire area was immediately put on lockdown as the police spent hours attempting to negotiate with the man. Meanwhile, Ali and his son were trapped inside the home, unable to escape.
Thankfully, after a dramatic turn of events, Ali and his son were eventually freed through a smashed window at the front of the house. The officers bravely carried them to safety. Miraculously, neither Ali nor his son were harmed during the ordeal.
But the danger was far from over. The man once again began firing at the police, and in self-defense, the officers returned fire. In a risky move, a police dog was sent in to assist with the arrest. After a tense standoff, the man was finally taken into custody after 6pm. He was then taken to the hospital under police guard for a dog bite injury.
The suspect, who is only 26 years old, has been charged with a total of 25 offenses, including five counts of assaulting police, five counts of firing a firearm recklessly towards a police officer, two counts of endangering life through reckless conduct, two counts of false imprisonment, and making a threat to kill. He is expected to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court this evening to face these serious charges.
