Singer Max George from the popular band The Wanted recently opened up about his recent hospital stay. He revealed that during his stay, he was filled with fear and even wrote his will on his iPhone as he feared for his life. The 36-year-old musician was rushed to A&E in Manchester last month where he had to undergo a life-saving surgery and was fitted with a pacemaker.
The incident occurred when Max woke up at his mother's house on the morning of December 11th, feeling extremely cold and with blue hands. He had been staying with his 63-year-old mother, Babs, in Manchester after a month-long tour in the USA with his band. After alerting his mother, who he credits with saving his life, he was initially sent home by their GP. However, a doctor friend advised him to go straight to A&E.
It was at the hospital that Max was told he needed a pacemaker. He described the terrifying experience saying, "I couldn't move my arms and the worst feeling was I felt like my throat was closing up. It felt like someone had their hands around my neck." After doctors checked his pulse, he was immediately taken to the cardiology ward where he was informed about the need for a pacemaker.
Max, who is currently dating former Strictly Come Dancing co-star Maisie Smith, had to break the news to her while she was in Kent, getting ready for a pantomime performance of Beauty and the Beast. "I was in the right place and, as much as it was difficult not having her around, and her head was spinning, it was better for her to focus on her work. I had my family there," Max said.
As he lay in the hospital, preparing for surgery, Max became overwhelmed with the fear that he might not make it. "It was really scary, all sorts is going on in your head, and certainly not a place I thought I'd be in at 36," he shared. It was then that he decided to write his will on his phone, realizing his responsibilities towards his partner, family, and nephews. "I was on the heart ward with about six elderly people, I was at least 30 years younger than them," he added.
Two days after being admitted, Max's heart rate dropped so low that he had to be taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for a CT scan. This led to his surgery being scheduled for December 18th, one week after he was first rushed to the hospital. The operation, which he described as "pretty mental," took three hours and was made complicated by collapsed veins due to his condition.
After the successful surgery, Max is now on the road to recovery and considers his pacemaker as the best Christmas present. He even shared a series of cozy Christmas pictures with Maisie, captioning it, "It's so good to be home."
