Man in Odisha sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting and killing his sister in-law.

In the small town of Berhampur, a heartbreaking case of rape and murder has finally been brought to justice. A man was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by a POCSO court in Odisha's Ganjam district on Thursday for the heinous crime he committed against his minor sister-in-law three years ago. The additional district judge, Pranati Pattnaik, who also presided over the POCSO court, delivered the verdict after carefully examining the statements of eleven witnesses.

According to Narayan Panda, the special public prosecutor of the court, the evidence was strong enough to prove the man's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The court not only handed down a life sentence to the perpetrator, but also ordered the district legal services authority to provide a compensation of Rs 8 lakh to the victim's family. The man who committed this heinous crime was none other than the victim's own brother-in-law. He took advantage of her vulnerability and senselessly raped and murdered her by strangling her in a nearby jungle under the jurisdiction of the Buguda police station. The incident took place on August 17, 2023, and left the entire community in shock and disbelief.

The victim's father had filed a missing persons report at the Buguda police station on August 21, when his daughter didn't return home. However, the police soon discovered her lifeless body in the forest area and apprehended the culprit on August 23. It was a swift and thorough investigation by the authorities, which led to the perpetrator's arrest and eventual conviction.

This is a tragic incident that has shaken the entire state of Odisha. The local newspaper, Orissa POST, has reported on the case and condemned the brutal act committed by the brother-in-law.
