Man in Odisha gets 20-year jail term for sexually assaulting a young girl.
In the town of Kendrapara, the Ad-hoc Additional Session Judge Tribikram Keshari Chinhara has made a ruling in a grave case of rape. The accused, Chandan Mallik, has been sentenced to 20 years of Rigorous Imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 52,000 for raping a minor girl. This ruling was made after careful consideration of the evidence and testimony presented by the prosecution.

According to the prosecution, Chandan Mallik forcibly took the minor girl to his house in the Aul police limit on September 15, 2020, and raped her. It was reported that the victim was drawing water from a tubewell with her mother when Chandan took her away and committed the heinous act. The victim was able to escape and immediately told her grandmother and mother about the incident. They then lodged a complaint at the Aul police station on September 16, 2020, against Chandan and seven others.

The Aul police registered a case against Chandan under Sections 376 AB, 341, 323, 294, 506, 34 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the POCSO Act. Chandan was subsequently arrested and brought to trial in the court of Special Judge in Kendrapara. After carefully examining the evidence, the judge found Chandan guilty and sentenced him to 20 years of RI and a fine of Rs.52,000. The judge also ordered that if Chandan fails to pay the fine, he will have to serve an additional year in prison.

However, the seven other accused in the case were acquitted by the court due to a lack of evidence, as stated by the Special Public Prosecutor. The judge also directed that the fine amount be given to the victim as compensation for the trauma she has endured. Additionally, the court has recommended that the government provide a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victim's proper rehabilitation. In order to facilitate this, the Secretary of DLSA, Kendrapara has been instructed to take appropriate steps for the sanctioning of the compensation amount for the victim. This ruling serves as a strong message against such heinous crimes and emphasizes the importance of ensuring justice for victims of sexual assault.
