Allan Scott, 42, was convicted of killing 83-year-old Patricia Holland and burning her body on a bonfire

A jury found a 42-year-old homeless man guilty of murdering an elderly woman who had taken him in and burning her body on a bonfire, a court heard.

Allan Scott had been living with 83-year-old Patricia Holland at her home in Gorleston, Norfolk.

Mrs Holland was described as a ‘charitable woman concerned with people who were down on their luck and the homeless’, prosecutor David Spens KC told Norwich Crown Court.

Scott had first been introduced to Mrs Holland in 2020 when he was selling paintings outside a shop and she offered him a place to stay.

But after a while, he started to become aggressive towards her and she wanted him to leave.

In retaliation, he killed Mrs Holland on the night of July 24, 2021 in order to remain in her home and be able to take advantage of her will.

Scott had been determined to stay and his best chance of being able to stay in her house was if she went missing’

‘The prosecution case is that he violently attacked her on July 24 into July 25, 2021, and burned her body on a bonfire in her back garden in an attempt to destroy all traces of her,’ Mr Spens said.

Scott denied murder but admitted preventing a lawful burial and he was found guilty following just over two hours of deliberation by the jury. He will be sentenced at a later date.

Patricia Holland was described as a benevolent individual who showed compassion to those less fortunate, such as the homeless.

Allan Scott, 42, was found guilty of killing the 83-year-old and then setting her body on fire in her own backyard. Evidence showed that Scott had become aggressive towards Mrs Holland and wanted to remain in her house. He was determined to remain and his best chance of doing so was if Mrs Holland was to go missing. The prosecution argued that he killed her on July 24th and then burned her body on a bonfire in an attempt to cover up the crime.

Scott will be sentenced at a later date.
