Antonio Shaw, a 63-year-old man from West Philadelphia, had suffered a series of strokes that left him unable to communicate verbally. On October 4th, he tragically entered the wrong house on North 62nd Street and was attacked by two pit bulls. Sharese Jackson, Antonio's sister, witnessed the horrific event and said the dogs were "very vicious and hungry" and "eating him like a piece of steak." Thankfully, a neighbor noticed the attack and called 911, and police were able to shoot one of the dogs and injure the other, who was later euthanized by animal control.
Antonio was rushed to the hospital for treatment and underwent 15 surgeries. However, the combination of his health complications and the dog bites and resulting infections proved too much for his body to handle, and he passed away on December 4th.
Michelle Shaw, Antonio's sister, spoke of his legacy and the lasting impact he had on the community. She said, "I want Antonio to know we love him, and he will never be forgotten and he was a great person...He was very outstanding. Everyone loved him and everyone is going to miss him."
Unfortunately, as of yet no charges have been filed against the owners of the house where the incident occurred. To help with the costs of Antonio's funeral, his family has set up a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $3,000. Sharese Jackson wrote, "We have money but not enough to cover his service, so I ask if you can help this family so we can have a proper homegoing for my brother." As of press time, the campaign is a little more than $500 from reaching its goal.
Antonio Shaw's passing has left a void in the hearts of his family and community, but hopefully with the help of generous donations, his family can give him the proper memorial that he deserves.
