Earlier this year, a man is set to appear in court for four attempted robberies on the NSW South Coast. According to police, the first incident occurred on April 1st when a 24-year-old woman was riding her bike on Mowbray Lane in Warrawong. The man allegedly approached her from behind, holding a knife to her back and taking her handbag containing a substantial amount of money. A 25-year-old man attempted to intervene, but the suspect escaped over a fence on Churchhill Avenue.
Another incident took place on April 20th at a shop on Gladstone Avenue in Coniston. A man reportedly threatened a 21-year-old employee with a knife while another man in a white jumper took vapes from the counter. One suspect, aged 36, was charged in connection to this incident and is currently facing court proceedings.
The third alleged incident occurred at a hotel on Montgomery Avenue in Warrawong on July 9th. It is alleged that a man armed with an axe threatened an employee before fleeing with cash at 10pm. Then, on July 20th, a 24-year-old employee at a bottle shop was also threatened with a knife before cash was taken. The suspect reportedly fled through the back of the store towards Railway Street in Bulli. Police believe that all four of these incidents are linked.
Yesterday at 1pm, police executed a search warrant at a property on Griffith Street in Warrawong. An hour later, a 29-year-old man was arrested at a nearby property. During the arrest, the suspect allegedly pulled out a kitchen knife in an attempt to evade being taken into custody. However, the police were able to disarm him. While walking the suspect to the car, he allegedly resisted arrest and caused injury to one of the officers, leaving them with a dislocated thumb and a laceration to their finger.
The alleged offender was taken to Illawarra Police station where he was charged with seven offences, including three counts of robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, assault on a police officer, and a domestic violence-related assault. He was denied bail and is scheduled to appear in Wollongong Local Court later today.
