Disneyland is bringing Princess Tiana to life with a new mural created by artist Malaika Favorite. The painting is part of the company’s upcoming attraction, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which is set to open at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort in 2024. Favorite, a Louisiana native, is drawing inspiration from the colorful art and rich history of her home state for the piece.
The mural will feature a number of scenes from the movie, including Tiana’s culinary journey and some of the film’s beloved characters such as Louis, the trumpet-playing alligator. Favorite studied at Louisiana State University, where she earned her BA and MFA degrees in 1971 and 1973, respectively. She is a renowned painter and has received numerous awards and grants over the course of her career. Her work has been featured in books and in museums throughout Louisiana.
Carmen Smith, the park’s senior vice president of creative development, discussed selecting Favorite to complete the painting with Click Orlando. She expressed the importance of maintaining the authenticity of Tiana’s experience, which is why they chose Favorite for the project.
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is replacing the popular Splash Mountain, which closed in May 2023. The attraction had been at the resort since 1989 and was a fixture at both Disneyland and Disney World. However, it has now been retired in favor of the new project. For the first time, Princess Tiana will be the featured Disney character for the 2022 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival Merchandise Collection.
