World champion Luca Brecel is set to return to the snooker tour next week, but without the cue that brought him Crucible glory. The 28-year-old Belgian has been travelling around the world since winning the World Snooker Championship in May, and now he's preparing to compete at the European Masters in Nuremberg.
Unfortunately, Brecel's beloved cue, which he had been using for two years, didn't make it back with him from the US. It was lost by an airline during his travels, and he's still waiting to hear if it will be recovered.
"It was my favourite cue, I won the World Championship with it. I got really used to it, it was the best cue I ever had, my favourite cue ever," Brecel said. "It's a nightmare to travel with, sometimes I wish I was a darts player with a small case."
Brecel's confidence is understandably low with his favourite cue missing, and he's not expecting much from the European Masters. His focus is instead on the Shanghai Masters in September.
"Normally I don't worry about it but this time I do because my other cue is not that good, I'm not that used to it," he said. "The other one was so good, I felt like I couldn't miss sometimes and now it's going to to be different. Obviously I've travelled a lot, I'm still a bit tired, so I'm not quite confident in the first one. Maybe the first one is a bit of practice and Shanghai [Masters] is going to be the first proper tournament."
Luca Brecel takes on Jackson Page on Tuesday in the first round of the European Masters. With his new season underway, the Belgian Bullet is hoping to have some good news soon regarding his missing cue. Let's hope he finds it soon so he can continue his journey to becoming a snooker legend.
