Landlord's house thief caught and arrested
A man has been arrested by the police in Bhubaneswar for allegedly committing a robbery at his landlord's house. The incident took place about a week ago and the accused is a 29-year-old named Lokanath Mohapatra. According to Subrat Kumar Meher, the Inspector-in-Charge at Tamando, the accused is a resident of Khurdha town and his arrest was made possible after the recovery of two gold chains and two pairs of gold bangles from him.

Meher further stated that the complainant and the accused had a friendly relationship as the former lived on the ground floor of the house while Mohapatra had rented the first floor. However, during the interrogation, Mohapatra confessed to having a habit of stealing from his landlord's house whenever the family was away or occupied with other things.

The theft took place on September 29, as explained by Meher. On that day, the house owner and his family had left to visit a nearby temple in the morning. They had locked the house and kept the keys hidden in a shoe rack. Seizing this opportunity, Mohapatra used the keys to unlock the main door and stole Rs50,000 in cash along with gold jewellery worth over Rs3 lakh from the cupboards.

To make matters worse, Mohapatra had then mortgaged the stolen items at a local bank and obtained a loan of Rs3.60 lakh. The theft was discovered by the house owner upon his return and he immediately filed a complaint with the Tamando police.

The police took swift action and arrested Mohapatra, who had admitted to committing the crime. The recovered items have been returned to the rightful owner. This incident serves as a reminder to always be alert and vigilant, especially in matters concerning rented properties.
