Kushalnagar Municipality to have 23 wards instead of 16

Kushalnagar, Jul. 20: After being under the Subedar administration for four decades since 1907 and later converted into a Mandal Panchayat and Town Panchayat, Kushalnagar has now been upgraded to a municipality. The first election for the members of the Municipal Board of Directors will be announced in November this year, and the government has issued a notification for the selection of members of 23 wards instead of the previous 16 wards.

In Kushalnagar, which has seen the fastest growth in Kodagu district, the elections for the Town Panchayat Board of Directors were held in 2018. In a period of seven years, Kushalnagar town has seen the power of three presidents, including administrative officers.

Now, on November 3 this year, the term of office of the current Town Panchayat representatives will end, and elections will be announced for the selection of people's representatives for the 23 wards of the municipality. A notification regarding ward-wise reservation will be issued soon.

In 2014, a proposal was submitted to the government regarding the municipality of Kushalnagar Town Panchayat, but due to technical reasons, it was not approved and after many difficulties, it was upgraded to Kushalnagar Town Municipality in 2021.

The Karnataka State Department of Remote Sensing and Personnel and Administrative Reforms has divided Kushalnagar Municipality into 23 wards, including the villages of Mullusoge and Guddehosur Gram Panchayats, which have now been included in the municipality.

The work of upgrading Kushalnagar to a municipality was done with the special interest of the then MLA M.P. Appachchu Ranjan.

However, the current governing body continues to have seven nominees from the government, including 16 ward members elected to the town panchayat governing body in 2018.

Meanwhile, the powers of the gram panchayat members there have been curtailed in just two years due to the inclusion of Mullusoge in the jurisdiction of Kushalnagar Municipality. In the next elections, the Kushalnagar Municipality, including the entire revenue village of Mullusoge and the Madapatna part of Gudde Hosur Gram Panchayat, has been divided into 23 wards.
