Kroger is taking a stand against food insecurity for students in partnership with Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta. On Monday, August 28th, the grocery chain opened the first of its kind food pantry at Mays High School, providing students with meals and supplies they may not have access to outside of the cafeteria.
The food pantry is a result of Kroger's Zero Hunger-Zero Waste foundation, with the goal of helping students focus on succeeding in their education, rather than worrying about how they will eat. Tammie Young-Enaemba, the manager of corporate affairs for Kroger's Atlanta division, shared that the pantry will “help ensure students can focus on their education instead of hunger.”
The launch of the food pantry was met with enthusiasm from the community, including Mayor Andre Dickens. Mayor Dickens, an alumnus of Mays High School, participated in the ceremony, cutting the ribbon to kick off the event. He also praised Kroger for "looking out for each other and helping each other as best we can."
The pantry is stocked with all the essential items for a healthy meal and is a resource for students at Mays High School and across Atlanta Public Schools. This incredible initiative will help students throughout the upcoming year and ensure that they won’t have to worry about going hungry.
