Tragedy struck the small town of Lake Elsinore, California on August 29, when 12-year-old Yahshua Robinson passed away in the midst of a gym class. Reports suggest he collapsed while running laps in the 90-degree heat without proper attire, having asked for water which was denied by his gym teacher.
Yahshua's aunt, Amarna Plummer, expressed her shock and anger at the situation her nephew found himself in. She told NBC Los Angeles that he had not dressed for the physical education class, and yet the teacher had made him participate in the activity as a form of punishment. Other students reported that he had started to feel ill, before asking for water and collapsing.
A police report stated that Robinson was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center-Murrieta, where he was pronounced dead at 12:25 p.m. The Lake Elsinore Unified School District released a statement expressing sadness at the student's passing, and a GoFundMe account was set up for the family to assist with any costs associated with his death.
The GoFundMe page described Yahshua's last day as beginning as a "typical, fun-filled day", before he became unresponsive during PE activities in the heat. Despite the response and care of medical professionals, he sadly succumbed to cardiac arrest at the hospital.
The family now mourns the loss of Yahshua, with no funeral plans set up as yet. His death is a tragedy that has been felt by the whole community, with more than 2,000 people donating around $80,000 so far, 80% of the goal of $100,000.
