Kodava Societies Play a Vital Role in Preserving Culture and Heritage

Srimangala, Oct 28: Amidst the fast-paced life of the modern era, cultural events like 'Patthalodi' play a crucial role in keeping the culture, rituals, and traditional practices of Kodagu alive. This was stated by Ajjikuttira S. Ponnanna, the Political Secretary to the Chief Minister and MLA for the Virajpet constituency.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the valedictory ceremony of the 10th annual 'Patthalodi' event, held at the Thavalageri Moond Naad Kodava Samaja in T. Shettigeri.

It is noteworthy that the 'Patthalodi' event—which carries religious significance and spans ten consecutive days following the *Kaveri Theerthodbhava* (the sacred emergence of the River Kaveri)—has been celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy by the people for the past decade. He noted that he has been invited to the event for the last four years, and each year, the enthusiasm of the participants has remained undiminished. Such traditions not only bring joy to the mind but also serve as a vital means of passing on our culture and heritage to future generations.

He further emphasized the need to pay attention to the declining population of the Kodava community. However, he urged that one must move forward with a realistic understanding of the situation. Since it is not possible to increase the population within a year or two, the community should strive to achieve greatness by making significant contributions to society and the community through its existing population. He stated that the contribution of the Parsi community—which has a population of only about 50,000—should serve as a model for the Kodava community.
