Kodagina Gowramma’s Ideals Continue to Inspire Women

Madikeri, Oct 27: Dr. Lalitha K.P., a researcher and recipient of the 'Gowramma Award,' stated that Kodagina Gowramma—who, even in her own era, articulated mature perspectives on women's sensibilities, freedom, and social issues through her literature—remains an ideal figure for women today. At an event held in the auditorium of the Government First Grade College for Women—jointly organized by the Kodagu District Kannada Sahitya Parishat and the college—the 'Kodagina Gowramma Endowment Award' for the year 2026-27 was presented. During the ceremony, which also included the distribution of prizes to winners of a short story competition for high school students, Dr. Lalitha K.P. accepted the 'Kodagina Gowramma Endowment Award' for her work, *Kodagina Janapada Kathegalu* (Folktales of Kodagu), and addressed the gathering.

She recalled the achievements of Gowramma, who demonstrated the courage to write about feminism as early as the 1930s. Despite living in a rural environment—where the influence of modernity was limited at the time—Gowramma’s thoughts regarding the lives and rights of women, as well as social inequalities, were remarkably visionary.

Gowramma authored approximately 21 short stories. It is not merely the quantity of her work that matters, but rather the ideas she conveyed to society through her writing. Dr. Lalitha noted that Gowramma’s stories explore both the female sensibility and broader social issues.
