Somwarpet to Host State-Level Mixed Boxing Tournament

Aiguru, Oct 26: The first state-level Mixed Boxing Tournament, organized by the Karnataka Amateur Mixed Boxing Association, was held at the Chennabasappa Hall in Somwarpet.

BJP District President Napanda Ravi Kalappa inaugurated the tournament by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Speaking on the occasion, he noted that sports not only foster physical and mental strength but also serve to bring people together. He expressed his delight that N.C. Sudarshan—a trainer who hails from his own hometown—organized this state-level tournament in Somwarpet.

A total of 210 competitors from eight districts participated in the event. The Bengaluru district team secured the overall championship title, while the Chamarajanagar district team took second place. During the prize distribution ceremony, MLA Dr. Manthar Gowda honored the event organizers—Dinesh, Nagesh, Sujatha, Savithri, Prema, and Aarathi—for their efforts.

Addressing the gathering, the MLA emphasized that the cooperation of parents is essential for the growth of boxing in rural areas. He also urged athletes to show respect toward their coaches. It is a matter of pride that the students, whom he had financially supported to participate in an international, world-level boxing competition in Nepal, went on to win gold and silver medals. He assured that special facilities—both from his personal capacity and through the government—would be provided for the sport of boxing, with a particular focus on athletes from the Kodagu district.
