Kicking off their directing debut, Converse Conductor leads the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
Jonathon Heyward, also known as the 'Converse Conductor', is making history as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's musical director, becoming the first black person and the youngest ever to hold the esteemed position.

It all started when he picked up a cello at age 10. According to NBC News, his mastery of the instrument led him to a renowned career in music, culminating in his appointment to lead the Maryland city's orchestra.

"I felt a part of something special when I first picked up the cello in the fifth grade," the 31-year-old conductor shared. "You are creating something bigger than one person. I think that's the beauty of the unity that you get from that classical music form."

As for his signature sneaker look, it happened entirely by accident. Heyward forgot his formal shoes for a Hallé orchestra concert in Manchester, England - but knowing the show must go on, he decided to perform while wearing his red Chuck Taylor Converse. The crowd loved the pop of color, prompting Heyward to continue with the style choice for its comfortability, earning him the nickname of the 'Converse Conductor' among his growing fanbase.

In his new role, Heyward is breaking color boundaries beyond his shoes. With nearly 62% of the population in Baltimore being African American, Heyward believes it's important to have a representative in this position that reflects the majority of the community. "It's a testament that work needs to be done," he said.

Outside of his duties, Heyward has also made it his mission to connect with his new community through music. He has been involved with the Dance Theatre of Harlem and the Orch Kids program in Baltimore, introducing the youth to classical music and inspiring them in the same way he was inspired when he was their age.

Heyward kicked off his five-year-tenure with a three-concert tour back in September, and with his red shoes and passion for the genre in tow, he is leading the BSO on a vibrant start.
