Katy Perry seeks to overturn a trademark ruling that found her footwear design too similar to an Aussie designer's.
Katy Perry, the famous singer, is hoping to turn her situation around and come out as the hero in a dispute with an Australian fashion designer. In April, the Federal Court found that a company owned by Katy Perry, Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, had violated Katie Jane Taylor's trademark of the Katie Perry label.

Katie Jane Taylor has been selling and designing her own clothing under the Katie Perry label since 2007. Justice Brigitte Markovic determined that Katy Perry's company, Kitty Purry, had infringed on the trademark by selling clothing branded with the pop star's name during her 2014 Prism tour in Australia.

Katy Perry was also found to have infringed the trademark on Twitter ahead of the tour, but she was not held liable for damages since her name had been used in "good faith". Justice Markovic also rejected other claims by Taylor that her trademark had been infringed through clothing sold at Target, Myer, and other websites such as Amazon and eBay during the Prism tour or ahead of the Witness Tour in 2018.

Katy Perry's company, Kitty Purry, and two other companies, Killer Queen and Purrfect Ventures, also had their bid to cancel the Katie Perry trademark dismissed by the Federal Court. The singer and her firms filed their appeal of the findings last week, and a hearing is yet to be scheduled.

It's certainly an interesting case, and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Be sure to sign up here to receive our daily newsletters and breaking news alerts, sent straight to your inbox, to stay up to date on all the latest developments.
