Kathy has finally returned to Albert Square after her trip to America, but she brings with her some unfortunate news. As many EastEnders fans know, Kathy had left Walford to visit her son Ben Mitchell, who had gotten himself into some legal trouble in the States.
Earlier this year, Ben's family was shocked to learn that he had been arrested for fraud and was sentenced to a custodial sentence after pleading guilty. It was later revealed that he had committed the crime while in America exploring treatment options for his friend Lola Pearce's brain tumor. Desperate for money to fund his trip, Ben resorted to stealing a credit card.
Unfortunately, all of Ben's efforts were in vain as Lola tragically passed away before he could return home. Now, Kathy is back in town to share some upsetting news about her youngest son. She quickly informs Phil Mitchell that Ben is not coping well, and that Ian Beale is staying behind to try and secure a better lawyer for him. Kathy is desperate for help from the Mitchell family.
Phil, however, has his own problems to deal with at the moment. He is preoccupied with his ongoing battle against Reiss Colwell, a shady accountant who swindled him out of his money. Despite Phil's relentless efforts, Reiss is unable to pay him back as he used the money to pay off his debts for his late wife Debbie's care.
Meanwhile, as Phil's deadline approaches, Reiss is feeling the pressure and is unable to come up with the funds. In a fit of rage, Phil tracks Reiss down once again, and it's up to Sharon Watts and Teddy Mitchell to diffuse the situation. Will Phil ever get his money back? And more importantly, will he be able to put his own troubles aside and help his son?
