Kate Garraway and her late husband Derek Draper had been together since 2005 and have two children together, Darcey and Billy. On Friday 5th January, Garraway announced that her husband had sadly passed away at the age of 56.
Prior to Draper’s cardiac arrest, Garraway had taken him to Mexico with the hope of receiving specialist treatment. They had been there since November before she had to board a 12 hour flight back to the UK in an effort to save his life.
‘It’s been an unbelievably gruelling eight weeks for Garraway, and how she is still going is quite remarkable,’ said an insider to The Sun on Sunday. They added that Draper’s treatment had been ‘going incredibly well’, and that the doctors had been ‘hugely optimistic about his long-term progress and future’.
Unfortunately, Draper’s cardiac arrest was unavoidable, with doctors concluding it was due to the damage to his organs inflicted by Covid-19. His journey back to the UK was described as a ‘military operation’, with an air ambulance taking him home in what was ‘a huge undertaking and ordeal’.
Since the announcement of Draper’s passing, there has been an outpouring of support for Garraway and her children. Fellow GMB host Ben Shephard wrote on Instagram: ‘On what has been the saddest of days @kategarraway I’ve been reminding myself of the wonderful times and memories we have all shared together.’
Garraway also thanked everyone for their support in her post, saying: ‘Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life.’
We offer all our love and support to Kate Garraway and her family during this difficult time.
