June 14th 2023.
It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my father, the iconic Marvel artist John Romita Sr. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 93.
I would like to take this time to ask for respect for my family as we mourn his loss. He was the greatest man I ever met and it would be my honor to follow in his footsteps.
The news of his death was confirmed by me on social media on Wednesday.
Many of my father's fans rushed to social media to share tributes. Director James Gunn tweeted a lengthy message and revealed he’d actually written to late comic book artist when he was young.
Gunn said: “My brother & I wrote Mr. Romita when we were young kids & sent him drawings of superheroes we were working on. He wrote us back, telling us what he liked about the drawings! A truly memorable experience in my life, making me feel like the magic of comic books, which seemed so otherworldly, wasn’t actually that far away. My thoughts & condolences are with his family & loved ones.”
My father was born in Brooklyn in 1930 and is best known for his work at Marvel Comics but also worked for DC Comics. He worked alongside Stan Lee on The Amazing Spider-Man, taking over the gig in 1966 after artist Steve Ditko. His vision heavily influenced the superhero that we know today. It was during my father's time on the series that Mary Jane Watson was introduced as well as the infamous villain Kingpin.
He was inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame in 2002 and in 2020 earned a place in the Inkwell Awards Hall of Fame.
My father is survived by his wife and two sons.
He will be remembered for his influence on Spider-Man, Marvel Comics, and the countless lives he touched. He will be greatly missed.
