Breana and Diana Baye, the owners of Vine + Vault in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia, had no prior experience with coffee, plants, floral arrangements, or retail. But, driven by their passion to restore a community gem nearly lost to inflation, they took ownership of the plant, coffee, and gift shop.

A few minor adjustments, including additional seating in one of the greenhouses on the property, brought back the familiarity that had been missing from the community. Diana shared that it has “fostered a lot more camaraderie” and enabled more conversations with neighbors.

The Baye sisters have also dedicated Vine + Vault to supporting local, Black women-owned businesses. Sabali Tea Company, Mind Your Grace, and Sage’N ish have all found a home on the store’s gift shop shelves, marking a milestone for these respective businesses. Diane expressed her joy in seeing them do well, noting that “just getting on a shelf is exciting.”

In order to keep the business running smoothly, the Baye sisters have been fearlessly accepting resources and support from locals. Breana even shared her advice to those wanting to start their own business venture: “Literally ask for help. We are a community. You’d be surprised how many people want to help you when they see you trying to do something.”

It is clear that the Baye sisters have not only restored a beloved community gem, but also created a space for local Black, women-owned businesses to thrive. What started as an unexpected journey has now become a source of joy and pride for the Philadelphia neighborhood.
