Marcus Rashford has been slammed by none other than Jamie Carragher. The Liverpool legend was scathing in his criticism of the Manchester United star, likening him to teammate Anthony Martial, who has had a dismal run over the last four seasons with only 19 goals across all competitions.
The 26-year-old had a particularly woeful performance on Saturday night in the 1-0 defeat at Newcastle, and was hauled off after only 61 minutes. This led to former United star Steve Bruce calling out Rashford's 'petulant' display.
Carragher was even more scathing, telling Sky Sports on Sunday: “Watching Marcus Rashford last night, that was an unacceptable performance for a few reasons. That lad didn't play midweek, so if there's any little, mitigating circumstances of players not being at 100%, [you can put down to] it's playing Wednesday night away in Europe and then you play Saturday and the travel.
”
The Liverpool legend went on to explain that it was up to Rashford to drag his team up, as local players often do. He said: “I’ve been a local player and it’s not easy being a local player especially when you team are not doing well. For Gary [Neville], Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, all those lads – more often than not they [United] were doing well. But for Marcus Rashford, and myself and probably Steven Gerrard at Liverpool, it’s up to you to fix it. And you have got to drag other people up with you.”
Carragher was particularly critical of Rashford's effort, saying that he was not showing enough leadership. He explained: “What you’re asking for from Rashford is leadership. Those players have to look up to him saying that is Manchester United. We’re supposed to be clamping down!” To illustrate his point, he used the example of Tottenham star Heung-min Son, who scored a goal and was heavily involved in the match against Manchester City, despite his team being on the back foot.
It is clear that Rashford needs to take a lead for Manchester United and show some of the same fire and passion that Son did for Tottenham. As Carragher said, it is up to him to drag his team up, and it is up to him to show that is Manchester United.
