Jamie Carragher criticizes a Liverpool player for consistent mistakes in their loss against PSG.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed concerns about the performance of the team's new signings. After their recent 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Carragher did not hold back in his criticism of several players, including Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Ibrahima Konate. The match against PSG was a tough one for Liverpool, as they struggled to keep up with the French side's attacking prowess.

Goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia sealed the win for the reigning Champions League holders. Liverpool's lack of attacking threat and possession (only 26%) was evident throughout the game, and manager Arne Slot even admitted that his team's main focus was to simply survive PSG's onslaught in the second half. Slot opted to play with a back five against PSG, but Carragher believes this was a mistake and that it actually made Liverpool more vulnerable.

He specifically pointed out that Liverpool's star defender Virgil van Dijk was negatively impacted by Konate's poor performance. "He [Slot] went about it with the back five all wrong, and they were actually more open than they would be with a back four," Carragher stated on CBS Sports. He added that playing in the middle of a back three can be ideal for an aging defender like van Dijk, as it provides more protection.

However, in this match, the Dutchman was forced to cover the entire width of the pitch, which he struggled to do. Carragher also praised PSG for their exceptional performance, comparing them to Pep Guardiola's legendary Barcelona side. But he also acknowledged that it wasn't just Liverpool's tactical errors that led to their defeat, but also the outstanding performance of the opposition.

Moving on to Liverpool's three marquee signings last summer - Ekitike, Wirtz, and Isak - who cost a combined sum of £320 million, Carragher had some harsh words. He believes the trio are not working hard enough off the ball and that this is contributing to Liverpool's struggles. "To be a top player for Liverpool as an attacking player, you need to be arrogant on the ball but humble off the ball, and they're not humble off the ball," he said.

Carragher also highlighted Wirtz's inconsistency since his £116 million move to Liverpool and said that he needs to do a lot more. In conclusion, Carragher acknowledged the contributions of Liverpool's "legendary players" like van Dijk, Alisson, and Mo Salah, but also pointed out that they are reaching the end of their careers. He believes that the new players are not yet up to speed and are still figuring out what it takes to play for a top club like Liverpool.

He also called out the new signings for not doing enough off the ball and being too timid. "The best way you can describe Florian Wirtz right now, he's got £125 million, is that he's neat and tidy," Carragher said.
