James Nightingale has some serious questions to answer in Hollyoaks this festive season when the truth about his treatment of Lucas Hay is exposed.
It all started when James decided to take a tougher approach to parenting his stepson, Lucas, who had been misbehaving for weeks. In an effort to teach him a lesson, he locked him in a shed overnight - and lied to Ste Hay about Lucas' absence.
Traumatised, Lucas promised to be better behaved, and James gaslighted him into believing that Ste wouldn't believe him if he told the truth. Little did James know, his plan was about to backfire.
The situation got further out of hand in the build up to Christmas, with James hitting struggling Lucas after another showdown. This was the final straw for Lucas, and Christmas Day sees a heartbroken Lucas escape the so-called festivities, as he and Dillon share a bottle of vodka.
When Ste finds out what happened, he is horrified. He tricks James into confessing everything, and it's even more horrific than he could have possibly imagined. James begs for forgiveness, but Ste brands him an 'abuser' and insists on getting the police involved.
Leela Lomax, wanting to know what's going on, is also horrified when Ste fills her in on how James hit Lucas and locked him in a shed. She sees red and lunges at James, hellbent on revenge.
Ste reiterates that there is little chance of a way back for James and that what happens next is up to Lucas and only Lucas given that it's he who has been traumatised.
Determined to make sure his son is okay, Ste enters Lucas' bedroom but, to his shock, Lucas is nowhere to be seen. The window, however, is wide open. Lucas has received support from Dillon following his ordeal, but will he be willing to forgive James?
Lucas does return, and in follow up scenes he invites James over for New Year’s Eve, admitting to Leah Barnes that he doesn't want his dad to be miserable. James tells Ste that he's signed up for anger management classes and that, from here on out, he'll put their family first.
The question is: will Ste ever be able to forgive James after his heinous actions? One to watch: Tuesday December 26 at 7pm on E4.
