Jaishankar meets Chinese & Canadian officials in Jakarta to discuss border issues & Khalistan movement.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a meeting with top Chinese diplomat, Wang Yi, on Friday in Indonesia. The two discussed outstanding issues related to peace and tranquillity in the border areas. Jaishankar said on Twitter that the conversation also covered the East Asia Summit, ASEAN Regional Forum, BRICS and the Indo-Pacific.

India has been locked in a military standoff with China for more than three years, with Jaishankar deeming it as the most complex challenge in his long diplomatic career. Wang Yi is attending the ASEAN plus meetings in Jakarta as Foreign Minister Qin Gang is unwell.

Jaishankar also met his Canadian counterpart, Melanie Joly, during his visit, during which they discussed the Indo-Pacific and economic cooperation. Jaishankar underlined the importance of ensuring the safety of Indian diplomats in Canada, in light of the recent anti-India activities by Khalistani supporters. Canada had assured India of the safety of its diplomats in response to the circulation of Khalistani posters online.

Jaishankar also spoke at the ARF Ministerial Meeting in Jakarta, emphasizing that India is taking steps to address global conflicts through diplomacy, promoting global cooperation and delegitimizing terrorism, and contributing to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

The Khalistani issue has been a source of contention between India and Canada for many years, with Jaishankar having previously stated that Canada's response to the issue is constrained by its "vote bank compulsions". India has asked its partner countries to not give space to "extremist Khalistani ideology", as it is "not good" for relations.

Last month, India condemned Canada after visuals of a public tableau celebrating the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi surfaced on social media.

On Friday, Jaishankar filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha polls from Gujarat. He is expected to be elected unopposed.
