Dear Am I Creepy or Cool,
First of all, let me just say that I understand your desire to connect with your coworkers on social media. It's a great way to stay in touch and get to know them better outside of the workplace. So, let's get rid of any negative thoughts and replace them with a more positive mindset.
Before you go ahead and start following your coworkers on social media, I have a few questions for you. Firstly, what is the culture like at your company? Some companies have strict policies against connecting with coworkers on social media, while others actually encourage it. It's important to do some research and find out where your company stands on this issue before you take any action.
Another important factor to consider is your current relationship with the coworkers you want to connect with. If you're already on friendly terms and they have given you the go-ahead to connect online, then there's no reason not to do so.
However, I do want to remind you to always respect your coworkers' privacy. If their profiles are set to private, it means they have chosen to share their personal life with a select few. It's important to keep this in mind and not use any information from their profiles against them.
Next, think about your role in the organization. If you are a team leader, you may want to think twice before connecting with your direct reports on social media. They may feel like they have to censor their posts or change their privacy settings, and that's not fair to them. I personally had to block my executive level leaders from seeing everything I posted because I wanted to maintain some privacy in my personal life.
Finally, always ask for permission before sharing someone else's content on social media. And if you're sharing something controversial or potentially disruptive, think twice before hitting that post button. Remember, what you post online reflects not only on yourself, but also on your organization.
At the end of the day, it's all about intention. If your intention is to simply stay connected and keep in touch with your coworkers, then there's nothing wrong with following them on social media. However, if you have any ulterior motives or are just being nosy, then it's best to steer clear.
I hope this helps clear up any doubts or concerns you may have had. Remember, you got this!
Sincerely,
Your Fairygodmentor®
