Kolkata was abuzz with news of renowned lawyer and dedicated social activist, Indira Jaising, taking on the representation of the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Forum. This organization, which acts as an umbrella for junior doctors in the state, has been at the forefront of protests against the recent gruesome rape and murder of a fellow junior doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital. The matter is set to be heard at the Supreme Court on September 17.
Previously, the WBJDF had been represented by senior advocate Geeta Luthra at the apex court. However, sources have revealed that Jaising has now secured Luthra's consent to take over as counsel for the junior doctors. In a show of solidarity, the Joint Platform of Doctors, West Bengal, an association of senior doctors supporting the junior doctors' movement, will also be represented by senior counsel Karuna Nandi and Sabyasachi Chattopadhyay.
Confirming the news, Aniket Mahato, a junior doctor and prominent face of the movement, stated that Jaising will be representing the forum during the Supreme Court hearing on Tuesday. Jaising is widely recognized as the driving force behind the current practice of live-streaming Supreme Court proceedings. Thanks to her efforts, a three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, approved the live-streaming of court proceedings.
Political analysts believe that Jaising's involvement in the hearing on behalf of the WBJDF is especially significant in light of recent events. Meetings between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the WBJDF delegation have failed to materialize, with the state administration rejecting the junior doctors' request for a live broadcast of the meeting. The administration cited the pending matter at the Supreme Court as the reason for the refusal.
