In a recent incident, the widely used messaging app WhatsApp experienced a temporary outage in India, causing inconvenience to its users. According to reports from Down Detector, a platform that tracks app outages, a majority of users (81%) were facing difficulties in sending messages, while 16% were experiencing issues with the overall app performance.
One user expressed their frustration on social media platform X, saying that they were unable to upload a status and it was taking a long time to do so. There was no immediate statement from WhatsApp regarding the cause of the outage.
Interestingly, some users also reported similar issues with other apps owned by Meta, such as Facebook and Instagram. A user on X posted a question to WhatsApp, asking if the app was down as they were unable to send messages. This is not the first time WhatsApp has faced such a major outage. In late February, the app experienced a widespread disruption, leaving users from all around the world unable to use it properly. Complaints on that day exceeded 9,000, according to Down Detector.
Earlier on the same day, there was a nationwide outage on the popular digital payment service, Unified Payments Interface (UPI). This caused major disruptions in online transactions, including shopping, bill payments, and business transactions. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates UPI services, confirmed on social media platform X that the disruptions were due to technical issues.
In their post, they stated that they were facing intermittent technical issues resulting in partial declines in UPI transactions. They reassured users that they were working to resolve the issue and would provide updates as they became available. The NPCI also apologized for any inconvenience caused by the outage.
