Ujjain: The Kshipra River, known as the 'mokshdayini', is not getting salvation from the dirty water of Kanh River. Despite schemes worth crores of rupees, the devotees are still taking baths with their hands over their noses.
The pollution of the river has also caused a large number of fish to die due to a lack of oxygen in the water. On Wednesday morning, more than hundreds of fish were found dead in the river, with a strong smell of foul spread in the vicinity of Bada Pull. People in the area collected the dead fish and took them away.
Mohammad Zakir, who works near Dhobi Ghat, said that the closure of the stop dam near Bada Pull and the release of water from the stop dam ahead caused the oxygen levels to deplete, leading to the death of the fish. The smell of the dead fish also caused distress to the people passing near the bridge.
Ravi Rai, the Leader of Opposition in the Ujjain Municipal Corporation, blamed the Kahn diversion project for the increasing pollution and death of fish. He said, “The water of the entire Kshipra has turned black and it should not be the case for a religious city like Ujjain.”
Mayor Mukesh Tatwal said that the fish are dying due to the lack of oxygen in the river. To counter this, fountains will be installed from Ramghat to Dutt Akhara Ghat. Prakash Sharma, in-charge of the Ujjain Municipal Corporation PHE department, explained that the water of Kshipra gets polluted and fish die due to the kutcha dams built by the irrigation department, which gets washed away in the flow of water.
Meanwhile, a woman from Ujjain North constituency was booked for fake voting during the MP elections 2023.
