The Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, recently had a meeting with US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, and former National Security Adviser, Robert O'Brien. This meeting, which took place on Wednesday, was an important one as both countries are currently in the process of negotiating a bilateral trade agreement. In order to further discuss the finer details of this agreement, a delegation of Indian officials is expected to visit the US.
Kwatra shared his excitement about the meeting on Wednesday, saying, "It was an honour to host Amb. Jamieson Greer and Amb. Robert O'Brien at India House today." He also expressed his gratitude for their support in strengthening the ties between India and the US.
The first phase of the bilateral trade agreement was announced in February, which included a framework for reducing tariffs on Indian goods to 18%. Kwatra mentioned that during the meeting, they had a productive conversation about various opportunities for cooperation between the two countries. They also discussed important global developments.
During a recent visit to Washington by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, bilateral trade was a key topic of discussion. However, on February 20, the US Supreme Court declared President Donald Trump's tariff policies under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act as unconstitutional. This has caused some changes in the tariff landscape and has affected the situation regarding the trade deal.
According to official sources, the agreement will be signed once the new global tariff architecture of America is in place. However, there are also concerns about two investigations launched by the US Trade Representative, which look into the failure to enforce prohibition on imports of goods produced using forced labour and overcapacity production in certain manufacturing sectors by some countries, including China and India. Despite these challenges, both countries are committed to reaching a mutually beneficial trade agreement.
