Tom Selleck may be known as one of TV's biggest stars, but the attention that comes with fame isn't exactly his cup of tea. The actor rose to fame with his breakout role as private investigator Thomas Magnum in Magnum, P.I. and has since appeared in over 50 film and television roles, earning several Emmy nominations along the way. However, despite his successful career, Selleck has always had a love-hate relationship with the spotlight.
In a recent interview, the Blue Bloods star opened up about his discomfort with fame and how it affected his personal life. At the height of his fame in the 1980s, Selleck found himself catapulted into the world of entertainment and struggling to maintain a sense of privacy. "I didn't like it," the 79-year-old actor admitted. "Mainly because of my family and my desire for privacy."
Selleck revealed that the sudden interest in his life led to uncomfortable questions during interviews that he didn't want to answer. "I was trying to find a way to draw a line about what I was willing to talk about," he explained. "I didn't always succeed, but the fame just kept growing and I still can't quite describe it. But thankfully, it wasn't something I had to deal with every day."
Reflecting on his early days of fame, Selleck shared that he was living a "lovely" life in Hawaii, where Magnum, P.I. was filmed. He even rented a one-bedroom house before he could afford to buy it. The actor recalled that the locals were aware of his profession, but the actors' strike at the time meant that filming couldn't start, so his neighbors were blissfully unaware of his level of fame. "I was actually living Magnum's life at the beach and stuff," he said, comparing himself to the iconic character.
However, life changed drastically for Selleck once the series took off and he was suddenly a household name. Despite being grateful for the success, the actor found it challenging to adjust to the constant attention. He also acknowledged that it was a blessing to film in Hawaii, as he believes it would have been harder to handle the fame if the show had been filmed in Hollywood.
Selleck, who is a father to two grown-up children, shared that his family was the reason he eventually decided to leave Magnum, P.I. in 1988. He adopted his stepson Kevin Shepard when he was 21 and also has a daughter named Hannah Margaret Selleck. "I quit Magnum to have a family," he stated. "It took a long time to get off the train, but I try very hard to have balance, and this ranch has helped me do that."
As for his acting career, it was recently announced that after 14 years, CBS drama Blue Bloods will be ending with its 14th season. Selleck, who plays Frank Reagan on the show, revealed that filming had wrapped up earlier this summer. In a statement, he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and his love for the show and its cast and crew.
