Experiencing something for the first time can be far-reaching. No Label Academy, a groundbreaking non-profit initiative, brings those possibilities to life. Founded by 2020 Harvard graduates Miles Weddle and Marcelo Hanta-Davis and rapper, producer, and entrepreneur Jason “IDK” Mills, No Label Academy recently welcomed 23 students aged 18 to 25 to its intensive seminar at Harvard.
On Saturday, each student collected their certificate of completion at a graduation celebration. This program is aimed at “democratizing and improving opportunities for students from systemically disadvantaged backgrounds” interested in careers in music. From workouts and meditation to workshops about mental health, financial literacy, and monetization, the seminar was jam-packed with star-studded speakers, including rappers Roddy Ricch and Joey Bada$$, award-winning actress Issa Rae, and celebrity stylist Bloody Osiris.
Major sponsors such as Nike Jordan, Converse, Christian Dior, Warner Music Group, Microsoft, and Timberland, made it possible for students to immerse themselves fully without paying costs. IDK spoke of the importance of brand equity, stating that it will bring more money than actual monetary gain.
The students also experienced a sense of magic. Magician and mentalist Tammer Q. shared a few tricks with the room, inspiring the students to believe that anything is possible. Ezy Truth, a Washington, DC-based artist, spoke of the power of vision and vulnerability after applying to the program too late last year.
Zahir Muhammad, a budding director and student at Louisiana State University, was so inspired by Ezy’s story that he wanted in on an opportunity to learn and grow with one of his best friends. He learned the value of “not being scared of yourself” and that he should “use songs to market [his] brand.”
IDK shared his concept of an end goal, using the analogy of bread crumbs leading up to it. He stays motivated by “continuing to show gratitude to the things that are and the things that aren’t.”
The co-founders are expanding the scope of No Label and “driving impact and scale.” Hanta-Davis interviewed some alumni and found that “almost everyone can agree that this course has given them a confidence boost.”
Martrice “Louie” Ellis, a graduate of the inaugural No Label Academy Class of 2021, also returned as a volunteer. She believes that the Academy has “built an essential support system” for first-generation students.
At the end of the program, the students found that they had earned a special uniform designed by Dior. IDK noted that this was a reminder that “the word impossible” cannot be used anymore. Thanks to No Label Academy, the students can now confidently pursue their dreams and make them a reality.
